Our ships are at the center of attention of the world

Özdemir Ataseven, Chairman of ÖZATA Shipyard that is building the new passenger ships of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality said that the ships made of carbon composite material used in aviation and space technology is also in the center of attention of the world maritime sector.    "Our process of production is being followed from every corner of Europe, and America", said Ataseven who is also the Vice President of Turkish Association of Ship Industrialists.  "Izmir will write history in the world maritime sector by this investment.  We leave aluminum and sheet metal to use carbon composite material.  This is called breaking new grounds.  The European banks that has ceased loans since 2008 did not come here in vain"

Ataseven continued as follows:  "The ships we are making of carbon composite material is 8 times lighter than the normal steel weight.  I am currently making a 50-meter ship for another customer, it weighs 450 tons.  The ship we are building for the Metropolitan Municipality weighs 110 tons.  Think about the fuel saving here.  Propelling 450 tons and 110 tons is a different thing.  It is easy to repair and maintain them. May God bless the Mayor for the maritime."

15 new passenger ships to be constructed with "carbon composite" material ordered by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality to develop sea transportation in the city made attracted the whole world´s attention to Izmir.  It was reported that Izmir´s new ships will be the biggest passenger ships in the world to be made of carbon composite material used in aviation and space technology.  Özdemir Ataseven, Chairman of ÖZATA Shipyard undertaking the construction of the ships, said that Izmir Metropolitan Municipality will make history in the world´s maritime sector with this investment.  He said that he has been a shipbuilder for 38 years and performed as an executive in professional chambers in the sector. "I am not saying that Izmir Metropolitan Municipality took an initiative on this issue.  They simply made a breakthrough.  This is proceeding from one segment to another.  I mean, leaving aluminum and sheet metal to use carbon composite material. The world has not seen a carbon ship of this size.  In our shipyard in Yalova, we are currently building the biggest ship in the world, including Scandinavian countries.  This is called breaking new grounds."

Ataseven congratulated Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu for his material of choice and said "I really congratulate the Mayor and his team.  It´s quite important to discover this.  I´m in the shipyard business, I have worked in every maritime management position, but I could not discover it."

Bankers had stopped the loans

Özdemir Ataseven reminded that Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu did a great job for the Turkish maritime sector with this investment, and that 4 Development Banks from different countries of the world came together in Turkey for the first time to sign a 110.0 Million Euro financing contract for Izmir Metropolitan Municipality. He continued as follows:
"I´m saying this not only as a shipyard owner, but also as an executive.  Now, Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu is doing extremely huge thing for the maritime.  I say he´s writing history.  I talked to the officials of the bank coming for the facility contract.  The loans had been ceased since 2008 for the maritime.  No one was giving loan to the maritime. But here we have lots of banks to provide loans for this project.  They do not come in vain.  So, when I go back to my shipyard, all the banks will come.  They will start to think positive about other seafarers.  Most importantly, carbon material brought in many things to us.  In my opinion, municipalities and states with a coast will make it this way from now on.  It is impossible for them not to do so.  They would be questioned if they don´t."

It´s unique!

Ataseven, also the Vice President of Turkish Association of Ship Industrialists, emphasized that the whole world is watching them as the ships they produce for Izmir are special in terms of size and material, and said "There are currently many companies, including those from America, coming to us as we purchase carbon material.  We know that our production process is followed from every corner of Europe, from America.  Here´s why:  The Scandinavians are doing that; other European countries also want to enter but the price is too high.  Because they pay 53 Euros per hour for labor, while we way 13 Euros.    Now, as soon as they see the prices we make, everyone will turn to the ships of carbon material. But it is impossible for them to build this ship in such high amounts.  Because their shipyards are not positioned to do so.  The infrastructure we prepared for the ships for Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has no equivalent in Europe now.

These ships are "100% environmentally-friendly"

"Ship production works are continuing as they were planned, and I am quite excited by this project", said Ataseven. "The new ships are "100% environmentally and sea-friendly" and nothing could be done beyond this technology for a passenger ship".   He also added that the new fleet they are preparing for Izmir Metropolitan Municpality in their shipyards in Yalova will provide fuel savings over 50%. "This ship we build with carbon composite material will weigh about 100-110 tons. Bu the main machines inside them are like the one I put in other ships.  When we consider the others, it is 8 times lighter than the normal steel weight.  I am currently making a 50-meter ship for another customer, it weighs 450 tons. The ship we are building for the Metropolitan Municipality weighs 110 tons. Think about the fuel saving here. Propelling 450 tons and 110 tons is a different thing. This material is extremely important for maritime.  Ships built with carbon composite technology amortize themselves in a short period of time due to this great decrease in fuel consumption. It is easy to repair and maintain them. May God bless the maritime."

The world follows us up
Stating that 15 carbon composite passenger ships of this size and within a single tender are built for the first time, Ataseven said "Let me tell you this first.  There is no ship available of this size in the world. In Turkey, there are some being made part by part.  But there are no ships with full infusion and made of full carbon."

He reminded that the companies providing service with passenger ships have to choose ships with fuel saving. "Because there are those using them as service and they have to have them made in great numbers.  Now, they are waiting as they think the price is high.  But when the prices we make go down, things will change.  All the companies, not only the Turkish ones, but the whole world follow us up.  Because these services are available in places where oil is drilled."

Ataseven emphasized that the wind energy is produced by placing barges in seas. "These ships will be extremely needed to serve them. I think the seas will be full of carbon composite ships.  Everyone will change their demands in a short period of time."
